Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973) requires web accessibility where federal money is used, but many states have furthered this policy by adopting “little 508s.” Although not required by law, WCAG 2.0 guidelines have historically been upheld as the technical standard and legal precedent for website accessibility.
